Coaching is more than just reaching goals; it's about deep personal change. Master Certified Coaches (MCC) use advanced techniques that go beyond the usual, tapping into a client's deepest values and beliefs. As I navigate my own journey towards achieving MCC status, I've been privileged to receive mentorship from and interview numerous esteemed MCCs. Their collective wisdom has given me ten pivotal principles, each designed to elevate your coaching approach to new depths. 1. Explore the Being: Focusing on the Client's Inner World, Values, and Beliefs
The first step in transformative coaching is to shift the focus from what the client is doing (the WHAT) to who the client is being (the WHO). This involves delving into their values, beliefs, and intrinsic motivations. By understanding the 'being' (the WHO) coaches can identify the root causes of behaviors and thought patterns, which can be more transformative than focusing solely on actions (the WHAT which is more transactional).
2. Observe Shifts and Emotions: The Subtle Indicators of Change
Paying attention to shifts in the client's emotional state or body language can provide valuable insights. These shifts often serve as indicators of important realizations, resistances, or areas that need further exploration. Observing these nuances allows the coach to guide the conversation in a direction that will be most beneficial for the client.
3. Embrace Silence: The Power of Quiet Moments
Silence is often overlooked but is a powerful tool in coaching. Allowing moments of silence gives both the coach and the client space to reflect and process. It also creates room for insights and realizations to surface naturally, without the pressure of constant conversation.
4. Share Your Observations: Catalyzing Deeper Understanding
Sharing observations about shifts in emotion, body language, or even contradictions in the client's statements can offer them a different perspective. This serves as a catalyst for deeper understanding and encourages the client to explore their thoughts and feelings more openly.
5. Listen Beyond Words and Body Language: The Third Level of Listening
Master-level coaches tune into the underlying emotions, energy, or shifts in the client (and themselves!). This deeper level of listening can reveal insights that may not be immediately obvious but are crucial for transformative change. It involves not just hearing what is being said, but feeling what is being left unsaid.
6. Focus on the Being (WHO), Not the Doing (WHAT): The Core of Transformation
Prioritizing the client's internal experience over their external actions is central to transformative coaching. Lasting change often starts from within, and by focusing on the 'being,' coaches are more likely to facilitate meaningful, sustainable transformation.
7. Validate and Acknowledge: Building the Foundation for Self-Exploration
Affirming the client's feelings, thoughts, and achievements builds trust and encourages further self-exploration. Validation serves as a form of emotional support that can make clients feel seen and understood, thereby deepening the coaching relationship.
8. Ask for Insights: Uncovering Hidden Gems
Encouraging the client to share any new understandings or realizations not only validates their experience but also helps both the coach and the client understand what is resonating and what may need further exploration. These insights often serve as turning points in the coaching journey.
9. Ask for Learnings and Awareness: Solidifying the Transformation
Inviting the client to articulate what they've learned or become aware of helps to solidify these new understandings. Putting their insights into words can make them more tangible and actionable, thereby reinforcing the transformative process.
10. Circle Back: Completing the Journey
Revisiting topics or themes from earlier in the session or from previous sessions can reinforce learnings and provide a fuller picture of the client's journey. It's an opportunity to celebrate progress, acknowledge setbacks, and set the stage for future growth.
By incorporating these ten principles into your coaching practice, you can move beyond transactional coaching to offer a truly transformative experience. These techniques not only deepen your impact but also align your approach with the high standards of ICF coaching.
